A-LAD-DIM

ALADDIN (1992)

A-LAD-DIM
MAD #320, June 1993
w: Stan Hart

This was part of an article with an introduction that went like this:

FAULT DISNEY DEPT.
Some of the largest grossing movies of the past have been animated features. Since Siskel and Ebert aren't animated enough to present our review of the last two Disney mega-hits, Mad has asked a more appropriate duo to do the job for us...
PINOCCHIO AND JIMINY CRICKET AT THE MOVIES

(The other movie is Beauty and the Beast, which is up in a few posts).
Aladdin (voiced by Scott Weinger) is a street rat who has run into the princess (Linda Larkin), who is traveling the marketplace incognito yearning to be a civilian. She reveals herself to be a princess to stop the arrest of Aladdin, but to no avail.

The Fergie joke refers to the Duchess of York, who divorced her husband after scandalous photos were revealed and was thus ousted from the royal family . It is not a reference to The Black-Eyed Peas.

After being freed from the dungeon by his monkey sidekick (Frank Welker), he is told by a fellow prisoner of a cave of treasures. The prisoner was really the sultan's assistant Jafar (Jonathan Freeman) in disguise, who set up a ruse to trap Aladdin and steal a magic lamp. Jafar thought he'd taken the lamp, but through sleight of hand, the monkey took it, making Aladdin the rightful master and unleashing the genie, an excuse to showcase Robin Williams in animated form.
“The dead” refers to the hype around this time about how Superman was supposedly killed off. People who had never bought a comic before bought multiple copies of what they thought would be the final issue of the comic that turned out to be worthless.
The parrot is voiced by Gilbert Gottfried.
Aladdin has fallen in love with the princess during the brief time that he's met her but since she's only allowed to marry princes, he uses one of his wishes to be made over as one. Meanwhile, Jafar is able to hypnotize the sultan and attempts a coup to marry the princess so he can have ultimate power. He drowns A-Lad-Dim and acquires the lamp and therefore services of the genie. He uses his last wish to become a genie himself so he'll now become the most powerful being of all, not realizing it also banishes him to a lamp.

Now that Jafar is gone, the land is free of him and the genie is now back in the services of Aladdin. Even though he's been outed as a peasant, the princess is still in love with him, but their marriage can never be since he's not of royalty. He has a chance to use his last wish and be made a prince, but instead uses it to free the genie.

MAD fails to mention that almost all Disney animated features are musicals. MAD's well-known for their song parodies, yet none of the songs are parodied here.

Gottfried was one of many celebrities in a long line feigning outrage over their appearance in MAD.
And this was the back cover for Cracked #280, May 1993
UPDATE:
From the Mexican version of MAD. There was no cover art for the parody in the U.S. Edition.
UPDATE 2:

Iago is thinking of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Ross Perot, who ran for President, was a millionaire.

  1. The last page of the Mad parody makes a glancing reference to Turhan Bey, a big movie star of the '40s who played a lot of Indian roles.

In the Cracked parody, in the dungeon scene, Mike Tyson can be seen behind Aladdin. Tyson had been convicted of rape and imprisoned the year before this was originally published.

Ross Perot was no mere millionaire; he was a billionaire. I mention it only because it reminds me of one of my favorite anecdotes from liberal Texas newspaper columnist Molly Ivins:

  2. Oh, and here's Forbidden Broadway, which has never passed up a chance to take shots at Disney, spoofing the inevitable stage version.
