AT THE ALAMO

THE ALAMO (1960) dir: John Wayne

AT THE ALAMO
MAD #63, June 1961
w:Larry Siegel
a: Mort Drucker

It would be a while before they did a parody that was an adaptation with jokes and usually a twist ending. This is about the making of the movie, around the time when the idea of deconstructing an institution was subversive enough.

This was John Wayne's (credited) directorial debut, and one of the big roadshow releases the previous year (MAD wouldn't have to be parody movies that were released right that moment until 1980 or so).
This parody shows a behind-the-scenes look with John Wayne narrating on the set, first about how he got the funding and screenplay, and cast.

The real names of the actors, just in case they're not that obvious, are in the trailer above.
Except for the women (it was 1960), Linda Cristal as Flaca and Joan O'Brien as Mrs. Dickinson.
Spartacus with Kirk Douglas and Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston were two other big pictures that year.

  1. Famous thing about The Alamo is that Chill Wills did a bunch of print ads campaigning for an Oscar (which was controversial at the time).

One ad, he wrote "Win, lose, or draw. You’re still my cousins and I love you all." Groucho did a counter-ad to the effect of "Dear Mr. Wills. I am delighted to be your cousin. But I’m voting for Sal Mineo."
