ALL THE RIGHT MOVEMENTS

ALL THE RIGHT MOVES (1983) dir: Michael Chapman

ALL THE RIGHT MOVEMENTS
MAD #258, October 1985
w: Arnie Kogen
a: Mort Drucker

The movie was only parodied in one panel for the piece MAD's Academy Awards For Teenage Films. All The Right Moves was the story of a high school football player (Tom Cruise) yearning to leave his small town and go to college, despite family and friends saying life was good enough for him right there. It wasn't a teen sex comedy or even particularly a youth movie, except that it was about a teenager. The panel was a nominee for “Best Losing Your Virginity Scene”. It's doubtful whether the writer or editors even saw the movie. The character's name is not Neil or anything close, and no attempt is made to make the girlfriend look like co-star Lea Thompson. MAD made its mark mocking adult culture in a way children could relate, but their humor did not work as well when they started satirizing pop culture that was aimed at the same demographic group, especially when they were a generation or two older.
