FEBRUARY UPDATES

One-time MAD artist Bruce Stark did a bunch of TV Guide covers I haven't included before and almost all were parodied by MAD as well.

Bill Daly, Suzanne Pleshette, Marcia Wallace, Peter Bonerz, Pat Finley, and Bob Newhart in the first incarnation of The Bob Newhart Show.

Not sure where this is from. Probably a TV Guide article about reruns. It has Dan Blocker and Lorne Greene from Bonanza, Jack Webb from Dragnet, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner from Star Trek, Alan Alda and Loretta Swit from M*A*S*H, Jackie Gleason and Art Carney of The Honeymooners and Lucille Ball as her character from I Love Lucy.

Richard Chamberlain was in Shōgun. This is more typical of what almost all TV actors make now.

Newhart cast members Bob Newhart, Julia Duffy, Peter Scolari, Mary Frann, Tom Poston, Tony Papenfuss, William Sanderson, and John Voldtstadt.

Ad in TV Guide by Sam Viviano with Henry Winkler, Rita Moreno, John Ritter, Penny Marshall, and David Lander. That's supposed to be Michael McKean though you'd only get that in the context.

I've mentioned before how Jack Davis was the official Monkees artist.

In 1984, the Motion Picture Association sent this flier by Davis to theaters announcing their new PG-13 rating and how some releases that already had a PG rating would be changed. Films included would be Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Woman in Red, Gremlins, and Red Dawn.

Drawing by Mort Drucker, maybe for self-promotion, since it's from 1985 and the references span several years. Roger Moore as James Bond, Bill Murray in Ghostbusters, Goldie Hawn as Private Benjamin, Tina Turner, Sylvester Stallone as Rambo, Clint Eastwood, and Jane Fonda with her aerobics videos.

Unused publicity drawing for Animal House, or maybe it was for the Delta House TV series but shelved when they realized they wouldn't have the character of Bluto.

Bob Newhart's comeback in the eighties with a sitcom about an author from New York moving to the country to become the manager of a bed and breakfast, making it sort of a combination of Green Acres and Fawlty Towers. I think Arnie Kogen writing this may have led to his becoming one of the writers for the actual show when it devolved into surreal self-parody (which made it funnier, in my opinion).

Bob Newhart was Dick Loudon, who managed the Stratford Inn with his wife Joanna (Mary Frann). The show and the one before this were vehicle for his stammering laconic straight man persona.

The “hockey puck” button is a reference to Don Rickles. Though they were never a team, they may have worked together professionally on a celebrity roast or special if that, their long-time friendship in real life was well-known.

Emily was his first TV wife. George Utley (Tom Poston) was the local handyman.

Throughout the parody are background signs of founding fathers who share the same last names of real life celebrities, though most of the celebrities are from the writers' generation rather than the readers'.

Kirk (Steven Kampmann) was the owner of the cafe next door before being replaced by Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. Leslie (Jennifer Holmes) was the maid of the Stratford Inn early on.

”Button-Down Mind” is a reference the comedy albums he did as a stand-up comedian.

The punchline is that Dick becomes a psychiatrist like his previous character, which is funny considering this series ended revealing the entire series was all a dream of that character.

Sitcom about an upwardly mobile family in Brooklyn. Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) was an obstetrician. His wife Claire (Phylicia Rashad) was a lawyer. Their children were Theo (Malcolm Jamal-Warner), Denise (Lisa Bonet), Vanessa (Tempestt Bledsoe), and Rudi (Keshia Knight-Pulliam).

Cliff's office was on the bottom floor to make it convenient for plots.

Grant Tinker was President of NBC.
“When E.F. Hutton talks, everybody listens” was an ad campaign for that brokerage firm.
Ricky Schroeder was a kid from another successful NBC sitcom Silver Spoons.

The German edition of MAD always did all-new covers for their parodies.

Family Ties used to follow The Cosby Show on NBC.

The A-Team was Murdock (Dwight Schultz), Hannibal (George Peppard), “B.A.” Baracus (Mr. T.) and Face (Dirk Benedict)

Bob Newhart's Newhart was around the same time, though not in direct competition with The Cosby Show.

Occasionally Sandra (Sabrina LaBeauf), another daughter they added later, was a college student who would sometimes appear.

There was a special issue of Cracked that was supposedly taken over by Russians. This was from the article Communist Broadcasting System's New TV Lineup in #227.

Usually when a porn parody is done of a movie or TV show it doesn't extend beyond punning the name and making the box look slightly like the poster (so I've been told). There were at least two editions of Not the Cosbys that actually tried to duplicate the formula in the video itself. Here are the parts with the porn edited out.

When I posted things from this before people pointed out MAD could get so much more mileage out of him today. They also pointed out I don't mention his sexual predatoriness the way I do with some of the other actors I post. That's true. Lots of these pages don't age well.
