Just about every comedian who has a hit show ends up returning for a new series. This one had him as Dick Preston (the actors' characters almost always have the same first name when the series is a showcase for them) a TV personality in Arizona. His wife was Jenny (Hope Lange) and his daughter was Annie (Angela Powell).
Dick's visited by Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore), his wife from his previous show. They lived in New Rochelle.
Richie was one of the kids from their old show. Hope Lange was on a show called The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
Perry Mason was Raymond Burr's first character before becoming the wheelchair-bound Ironside.
On Mary Tyler Moore's series, she was a production assistant for a news show. Monty Hall was host of Let's Make a Deal.
Mary Tyler Moore's character in her own series was originally supposed to be a widow but the network didn't want audiences to think Dick Van Dyke was dead. At 97 he's still not.

They blew an opportunity by not calling it The Sick Van Dyke Show.
Dick Van Dyke played Rob Petrie, a TV comedy writer in New Rochelle living with his wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) and son Ritchie (Larry Matthews).Rob's co-workers were Buddy (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally (Rose Marie). Buddy was always "on".
Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon) was the butt of their jokes.
Alan Brady (Carl Reiner), was the star of the show they all wrote for, and who you almost never saw. Alan Brady was loosely based on Sid Caesar and Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, based it on his days of writing for Caesar.
As you may notice, the puns on the characters' names don't stay the same within this parody.
Millie (Ann Morgan Guilbert) was the Petries' neighbor.
In 1966, it was considered acceptable to hit women. Ouch. Sorry if this triggered anything, I didn't see it coming. If it's any consolation, he gets hit. Don't blame me. I wasn't born yet.
