A CRAPPY PLOT NOW
Australian MAD #305, June 1991
w & a: Peter Broelman
Acropolis Now, which has nothing to do with Apocalypse Now, is a sitcom in Australia about a group of sons continuing the family business, a Greek diner, while the father returns to his homeland.
Jim (Nick Giannapoulos) is the son who has inherited the diner. Ricky (Simon Palomares) is the manager. Liz (Tracy Callender) is a waitress, a feminist, and native to Australia. Skip (Simon Thorpe) was a cook. Memo (George Kapiniaris) is a waiter at the Acropolis who help perpetuate the self-mocking stereotype of Greeks as swingers. Jim's cousin Effie (Mary Coustas) became sort of the breakout character of the show and had her own specials.
Swap 'Berlei' for 'Victoria's Secret', 'Germaine Greer' for 'Gloria Steinem', and '00 555' for just plain '555'
'Wog' is a slur in Britain and Australia for Mediterranean and brown people. I guess it's okay for me to say the word in this context since it's being self-owned and it's not American. Memo, whose second language was English, would use noises and gestures when talking about sex. Effie had a crush on Ricky, too timid to accept her advances.
A-Z GUIDE TO MOVIES AND TV SHOWS PARODIED BY MAD, CRACKED, CRAZY, ETC. UP TO 1996. THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS. SPOILERS AND OTHER NON-SEQUITURS, TOO. SOMETIMES THESE THINGS HAVE WORDS OR SITUATIONS WE DON'T USE ANYMORE. YOU KNOW, 'CAUSE THEY'RE OLD.
