THE CROCKFORD FILES
MAD #217, September 1980
w: Lou Silverstone
a: Angelo Torres
The Rockford Files featured Jim Rockford (James Garner) as a private detective in Los Angeles, basically Bret Maverick from Garner's previous show in a different setting. Each show began with his telephone answering, the cards being an allusion to Garner's Maverick character of Wild West gambler. The parody alluded to it further with its picture of a cowboy.
Noah Beery, Jr. was his father Jim a/k/a Rocky and his friend on the police force was Dennis (Joe Santos).
The shirt Rockford is wearing refers to his character being a pardoned convict. The camera is a reference to Garner doing a series of commercials for Polaroid.
Angel Martin (Stuart Margolin), the show's comic relief, was Rockford's friend in prison.
This was the cover for MAD's German edition.

Sick also did something else about the show, kind of, a couple issues later in #127. It was called "The Tale of Rouqfort Viles", but it was cobbled together entirely out of publicity stills from Maverick.
ReplyDeleteIn the Mad splash, there's a photo of a woman that says "I am not his wife!" I'm not sure who it is, but looking at the cast, maybe it's Gretchen Corbett, who had been a semi-regular on the show?
The photo of the woman is, I believe, actress Mariette Hartley who appeared with Garner in the Polaroid commercials and had great chemistry with him (and thus people thought they were married...)
ReplyDelete(Checking Wikipedia to confirm the spelling of her name, I learned that she would wear a T-shirt saying "I am not Mrs James Garner". It goes on to detail that she also had one for her infant son ("I am not James Garner's child") and one for her husband ("I am not James Garner"). Garner's actual wife got in on the fun and got a T-shirt that said "I am Mrs. James Garner".)
There may have also been a TV Guide article about Hartley titled "That woman is not James Garner's wife".
Ha! Good catch!
