GRACE UNDER FIRE
ABC 1993-1998
GRACE UNISPIRED
MAD #338, August 1995
w: A. J. Marley (Arnie Kogen)
a: Angelo Torres
The first page talks about this is derivative of Roseanne, Margaret Cho in All-American Girl, and Ellen in that it's just taking the material of a stand-up comedian and giving them a sitcom, though that's something that's existed since the beginning of television.
It was a show about Grace (Brett Butler), a single mother with three children, which was basically the premise of Butler's act. The children were Patrick (Dylan/Cole Sprouse), Quentin (John Paul Steuer), and Libby (Kaitlin Cullum), The cast is her sister Faith (Valri Bromfield), Russell (Dave Thomas), Nadine (Julie White), Wade (Cast Sander), and Jimmy (Geoff Pierson)
There are lots of jokes alluding to Brett Butler's Southern heritage, many of which would be considered no-nos today.
The man behind O.J. Simpson is Lance Ito, the judge in his murder case.
The co-worker at the factory where she works is Dougie (Walter Olkewicz).
The original opening was changed for dyndication because Lennon/McCartney lyrics would be too expensive to keep using for reruns.
GROSS UNDER FIRE
Cracked #301, September 1995
w: Greg Grabianski
a: John Severin
In the Mad story, the guy behind O.J. and Lance Ito is Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, leader of an Egyptian Islamist terrorist group affiliated with Al Qaeda. At the time, he was on trial for plotting bombings and assassinations, for which he would be found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
