Cracked, March 1981
a: John Severin
Once in a while, Cracked did a parody that wasn't of any movie in particular. They all did, actually, but Cracked's didn't have caricatures of anyone recognizable or use a recognizable plot from any past picture. This was one they did of the gangster picture genre. The saving grace Cracked had in the 70s and early 80s was John Severin, who drew at least half of every issue then.
Since we know that Severin can draw celebrities, I wonder if that was a choice on his part to not make the characters look like anybody famous.
ReplyDeleteYeah, MAD would have either had likenesses of people like Cagney and EGR, or put 1981 stars in it. The idea of making it an homage to 30s gangster films was probably an afterthought. Not like Cracked had strict editorial standards or anything anyway.
