Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston) lives in East Egg on Long Island and has gone across the harbor to visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow) and her husband Tom (Bruce Dern)in West Egg. She is there with her friend Jordan (Lois Chiles). They're rich but don't seem to do anything for a living.
Nick's home is next door to the mysterious tycoon Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford), who throws extravagant parties nightly. Daisy reacts strange when Nick mentions Gatsby, but we don't know why yet.
Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson (Karen Black), the wife of his auto mechanic George (Scott Wilson).
After attending a party of Gatsby's, Nick is invited to lunch the next day with Gatsby and his business partner Meyer Wolfsheim (Howard Da Silva). Later, when Nick invites Gatsby and his cousin Daisy over for tea it is revealed that they had been lovers in the past and their relationship begins again.
Daisy did not marry Jay Gatsby in the first place because he was too poor, but always loved him and not Tom.
They all go for a trip to the city and Daisy reveals her affair with Jay but cannot bring herself to say that she still loves him. She drives off in Gatsby's car, accidentally running over Myrtle. Word gets to Myrtle's husband George, who thinks Gatsby killed her and shoots him. Nobody attends Jay Gatsby's funeral and everyone continues their life as if nothing happened.
