The main cast of the show were Michael (Ken Olin), Hope (Mel Harris), and their daughter Janie, Gary (Peter Horton), Ellyn (Polly Draper), Melissa (Melanie Mayron), Elliot (Timothy Busfield), and Nancy (Patricia Wettig), Michael and Elliot work at an advertising agency. Michael and Melissa are cousins, Gary was his college friend, and Ellyn was a childhood friend of Hope.
