The premise was that a group of aliens was sent to earth (title of the show) to observe it taking the guise of a family of humans. They would convene on the roof of their house. The family was Dick Solomon (John Lithgow), Harry (French Stewart), Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and Sally (Kristen Johnson)

Dick took the identity of a physic professor at Pendleton College. His co-worker was Mary Albright (Jane Curtin).

Tommy, the one disguised as a teenager, pretended to be a high school student.
