CADDYSCHLOCK

CADDYSHACK (1980)

CADDYSHLOCK
#258, October 1985

Another comedy looked at fondly by people my age that I don't find to be that big a deal, probably popular from being shown on cable endlessly, thus something high school kids could copy onto VHS and pass around. To be sure, there are lots of funny scenes, even a few quotable lines, but not as funny as so many other films I could name, but that's just me. Unlike its closest relative Animal House, it's all over the place (they say the original script was four hours long), and if they picked a lane it could have been a masterpiece. It was made at the height of cocaine/Hollywood creativity and it shows.

Parodied only in this panel from MAD's Academy Awards For Teenage Films. The presenter is probably writer Arnie Kogen himself.
This scene didn't even have Chevy Chase doing the throwing up. He was probably used in this panel because he was a star of the movie and also a big star in general. Nor was this scene the most “disgusting”. There was a part where a candy bar in a swimming pool is mistaken for a turd. Maybe too much for MAD back then. That and Bill Murray's washing a golf ball behind a bush to make it look like he's masturbating helped give the movie an R rating, but wouldn't be out of place on prime-time TV forty years later.

Here's the actual scene for comparison.
Incidentally, Chevy Chase as an aspiring young comedy writer wrote one article for MAD in 1970. This was the back cover for #134.
And Hulk Hogan's still here, most recently because of some defamation lawsuit or something.
