THE TENTH HOUR

THE ELEVENTH HOUR
1962-1964 CBS

THE TENTH HOUR
MAD #80, July 1963
w: Lou Silverstone
a: Mort Drucker

Short-lived show about the psychiatric profession I'd never seen or heard of and couldn't find clips of, but here it is.

I believe the department name refers to how Edd "Kookie" Byrnes was no longer a TV heartthrob.

The first season the head doctor was Dr. Bassett (Wendell Corey). Here the president is Richard Nixon though he wouldn't be the president for another six years.
Italian-Americans protested against mobsters having Italian names.
Does anyone know if John Smith/Egghead is supposed to be a caricature of anyone?
The psychiatrist Dr. Bassett is seeing at the end is real-life psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers.

  1. On the last page, that's Bobby Kennedy in the first panel, and Hugh Hefner in the jury box (why? who knows?).

As for John Smith/Egghead... Possibly Carroll O'Connor? He was apparently on the show, though as a doctor.

    1. No, I was wrong about Smith/Egghead. That's Rod Steiger, and I can say that for sure thanks to Walter James Brogan swiping from this in the spoof he drew of F.I.S.T.

    2. One last thing - I only just found out that the D.A. wasn't a regular character on the show, but another of Mad's 'guest stars'. That's Herschel Bernardi.
