In the future world of 1997, Manhattan is a penal colony where the President (Donald Pleasence) is stranded and prisoner Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) will be given a complete pardon by chief Hauk (Lee Van Cleef) if he rescues him in time to address a summit meeting.
Snake is injected with explosive chemicals that will detonate if he doesn't return on time.
Snake encounters all kinds of dangerous criminals in his journey throughout New York City and is rescued by a cab driver (Ernest Borgnine), who takes him to The Brain (Harry Dean Stanton), The Brain and his girlfriend (Adrienne Barbeau) know the whereabouts of the President. The President is being used as a human shield to help the Duke (Isaac Hayes) break out of the city.
Snake finds the President but is captured by Duke's men who force Snake to fight in a deathmatch.
