SQUARE DREGS
MAD #241, September 1983
w: Arnie Kogen
a: Mort Drucker

Short-lived sitcom from mostly Saturday Night Live and National Lampoon alumni, about a freshman class at Weemawee High, focusing mostly on Patty (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Laura (Amy Linker) trying to fit in. Other students were Muffy (Jami Gertz) the preppie, Valley girl Jennifer DeNuccio (Tracy Nelson), her boyfriend Vinnie (John Caliri), and their friend LaDonna (Claudette Wells).
Patty and Laura's best friends were the equally outcast Marshall Blechman (John Femia) and Johnny Slash (Merritt Buttrick).
Tracy Nelson is Ricky Nelson's daughter.
I'm sure readers of this blog are familiar with Gabe Kaplan and Welcome Back. Kotter. “Totally different head” was something Johnny Slash would say to differentiate punk from new wave.

  1. Totally pointless trivia: Square Pegs was the shortest TV series Mad ever spoofed, with just 20 episodes, narrowly edging out Battlestar Galactica.

Other one-season wonders included The Rogues, Honey West, Then Came Bronson, Longstreet, and Bridget Loves Bernie.
