  1. In the Mad splash, the Columbo reference is a joke about an ill-fated series that Kate Mulgrew had starred in, Mrs. Columbo. It can't quite be called a spin-off from Columbo, because on that show his wife was often mentioned but never seen. Peter Falk disliked the idea of Mrs. Columbo and never appeared on it. In the second season the show tried to scrub the references to Columbo and stand on its own, but the ratings stayed low and it was cancelled after 13 episodes.
