Partially based on a short story in the December 1980 issue of National Lampoon called Christmas '59 written by John Hughes and illustrated by MAD cover artist Richard Williams. Part of Sixteen Candles was based on this as well. If you thought the Long Duk Dong character in the latter was racist, multiply that by ten and you have the Asian exchange student from this story, typical of the dark turn the magazine started taking at the time.
