THE FLYING ACE

THE FLYING ACE
MAD #93, March 1965
w: Dick DeBartolo
a: Mort Drucker

From back when there were only three networks and maybe some local channels, when TV actually signed off and old movies were the last thing that was shown. This was an homage to the aviator movies of the 30s and 40s, with Ringo Starr as The Ace, Ed Sullivan as the commanding officer, and the rest of the Beatles in the control tower.
For John Lennon's 81st birthday we bring you this...

  1. Bunch of cameos in the second-to-last panel, most prominently the two comic strip characters, Steve Canyon and Smilin' Jack, and Barry Goldwater on the extreme right, where he belongs. The guy who's peeking over Ringo's shoulder is Jimmy Stewart, but I'm not sure about the guy peeking over Sullivan's shoulder - maybe Spencer Tracy?

  2. You are correct. A GUY NAMED JOE reference. And Smilin' Jack's forehead is a reference to how his strip would advertise air shows.

  3. It just struck me that the first woman - the blonde, not the brunette - looks a lot like how Drucker drew Tippi Hedren in The Birds. I think it's meant to be her.

    1. As for the brunette, I think I've placed her at last - that looks like Natalie Wood.
