GIGGLIN'S ISLAND

GILLIGAN'S ISLAND
1964-1967 CBS

GIGGLIN'S ISLAND
MAD #259, December 1985
w: Larry Siegel
a: Sam Viviano

When Nickelodeon started running syndicated reruns in primetime, parodies of reruns became a regular feature in MAD as well. Gilligan's Island is probably one of the most famous rerun shows of all time, probably even millennials and under know the theme song by heart, so I'll spare too much information.

Gilligan (Bob Denver) was the first mate on a boat run by the Skipper (Alan Hale, Jr.) that was shipwrecked and stranded. The other passengers were Ginger (Tina Louise), Mary Ann (Dawn Wells), the Professor (Russell Johnson), Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus), and his wife (Natalie Schafer). Those without names had no names.

-In the fifties, MAD did a comic about Robinson Crusoe, and Friday was drawn as Jack Webb, the actor who played Joe Friday on Dragnet.
-Thurston Howell is drawn as Mr. Magoo because the actor who played him also did that voice.
-The Love Boat, which was parodied by MAD, Cracked, Crazy, and Sick, will be posted in due time.

GIGGLIN'S ISLAND: THE MOTION PICTURE
Cracked #236, July 1988

The Flintstonesque executives at the beginning are supposed to be Menahem Golan and Yorum Globus of Cannon Films. Gilligan her is Sylvester Stallone, The Skipper is Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ginger is Madonna, the Professor is Clint Eastwood, who was then the mayor of Carmel, California, and Mary Ann is Grace Jones.
The Howells' captor is Dolph Lundgren
Sean Penn used to be married to Madonna.

ISLE OF LUST
Weirdo #17, Summer 1986

Finally, there's this from the seminal underground anthology. Hard to believe as recently as 35 years ago a comic store was busted for obscenity for selling a comic for containing this. A witness in the case actually had to read this story in court.

  1. In the Cracked parody, the female villain, just going by context, has to be Stallone's ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen.

  2. Marie Severin drew a parody of this show in Marvel's What The--? #18, where frozen Captain America washed up on the island.
