THE ODDFATHER, PART III
MAD #304, July 1991
w: Arnie Kogen

This installment was a flop when it came out, mainly because the whole story is basically told in the first two movies, this came out right after GoodFellas, and Al Pacino had silly hair.
It's 1979 and Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) has moved back to New York, abandoning the Mafia roots he set in Nevada. During that time, he has used the wealth he has accumulated to set up a Catholic charity, the Vito Corleone Foundation. He is divorced from Kay Adams (Diane Keaton) who has custody of children Mary (Sofia Coppola) and Anthony (Franc D'Ambrosio). In addition to actors that appear later, in the splash panel are sister Connie (Talia Shire), lawyer B. J. Harrison (George Hamilton, famous for his tan) and singer Johnny Fontaine (Al Martino). Also in the background is a caricature of Senator Al D'Amato. They are all at a party for the Corleone Foundation's donation to the Church.
Anthony wants to be an opera singer despite Michael's aspirations to for him to be a lawyer. Joey Zaza (Joe Mantegna) who now heads Michael Corleone's former crime operations is having trouble with one of his employees, Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia), the hot-tempered biological son of Michael's brother Sonny. Michael convinces the two to make up, and when they hug Vincent bites Joey's ear off. The church is undergoing a transfer of power and some of its members are skeptical of the Corleones' racketeering past, and the family needs to get the Pope's blessing to buy their stock in the Immobiliare Corporation. Michael calls a meeting in Atlantic City to let all the casino shareholders know he's out of the mob and buys them all out, except for Joey Zaza...
...who storms out and takes revenge by shooting up the casino. Everybody dies except Michael and the family, who manage to escape. During an Italian pride parade, Vincent's men have Joey killed against Michael's wishes. Vincent's next in line to be head of the Corleone family, but needs to learn to keep his temper in check. They're all in Sicily to see Anthony sing in his first opera, and while there Michael confesses all his past sins.
With Michael Corleone out of the crime business for good, he makes Vincent the new Godfather, but under the condition Vincent stop seeing his daughter. There's a plot to assassinate Michael Corleone he's oblivious to, Vincent thwarts it while getting rid of his enemies, and Mary ends up being accidentally assassinated in the crossfire.
In the opera here are Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, James Caan, and Robert DeNiro from the first two movies.

At least I think that's a C. Looks more like a G, but Glodfather wouldn't make much sense. Not that making sense has stopped some of these parodies before.
In a scene they left out of the MAD parody, right after the scene where Vincent bites Joey's ear, Vincent is in bed later with a woman he met earlier at the party, played by Bridget Fonda, and his home is broken into by Joey's men in retaliation.
-Kay also comes to see Anthony sing in Sicily, and Michael tries to briefly rekindle what romance they might have left.
-One of the ways they try to kill the enemies now that Vincent is head of the family, is by Connie giving Don Altobello (Eli Wallach) a box of poisoned cannolis.
-One of the Corleone enemies is stabbed with his glasses.
-The movie critics in the last panel are Roger Ebert, Jeffret Lyons, Joel Siegel, Gene Siskel, and Gene Shalit.

In the Mad parody, the guy in the lower left of the opening splash (asking about Tim Haven) is real life Mob boss John Gotti.
ReplyDeleteThat's probably him in the splash of the Cracked parody too, at the far right of the table, but with Brogan it's harder to tell.
