Terry Doolittle (Whoopi Goldberg), while stating after hours at work as a computer programmer at a bank, gets messages from an Englishman named Jumpin' Jack Flash whp is being pursued by the KGB and needs her help to return to the United States. Her co-workers such as Cynthia (Carol Kane) think she is seeing someone. She's sent to the British Consulate to deliver a cryptic message to a man named Jeremy Talbot, and then She's sent to his vacant apartment to retrieve a frying pan that has some of his CIA contacts. She meets one of the contacts who is then shot down.
Terry tries to report the murder to the police, portrayed here as the cast of Barney Miller. At work a man claiming to be a computer repairman (James Belushi) shows up but then disappears as soon as she calls the computer company. She's asked by Jack to infiltrate a ball, and Jack ask her to wear a dinner jacket under the assumption that she's a man. She shows up dressed as Diana Ross and while trying to get contacts gets her dress caught in a paper shredder, then comes home to find her apartment has been trashed.
Snooping around and trying to find contacts for Jack, she uses a phone booth which is towed away while she is using it by enemies of Jack. Lady Sarah (Sara Botsford), an ex-lover of Jack that Terry tried to contact earlier, has a change of heart and comes to her home with the information she needs. The KGB double agents that were thought to be British come to her work pretending to be clients, but are really there to make sure the information doesn't get to Jack. They're defeated by Marty (Stephen Collins) a co-worker who was actually an undercover CIA agent. Eventually, she gets to meet Jack, Here he's Eddie Murphy who at the time was the #1 box office star.
