M*A*S*H*E*D

M*A*S*H
CBS 1972-1983

We continue M*A*S*H week with our second day of Cracked parodies. They did eight in all and I posted the first four yesterday, the day before that I posted the MAD and Bananas parodies and the day before that I had MAD's version of the movie. Tomorrow we'll conclude with how Crazy and Sick handled the second most parodied show ever.

M.U.S.H
Cracked #175, January 1981

This covers the end of the series through the eyes of Cracked. The program was on eleven years and went through numerous changes. This is about those.

M*A*S*H was about surgeons during the Korean War in a mobile army hospital. It focused mostly on Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda) and B.J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell). Other regulars were Majors Charles Winchester (David Ogden Stiers), Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan (Loretta Swit), and Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr). When Klinger started on the show, he wore dresses so superiors would hopefully think he was crazy and give him a Section 8, but he became accustomed to military life towards the end.
Colonel Potter (Harry Morgan) ran this particular M.A.S.H. unit. Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) had been star of All in the Family but by this time his series was Archie Bunker's Place.
Mork of Mork and Mindy was Robin Williams, Latka Gravas was Andy Kaufman.
Father Mulcahy was played by William Christopher. Any excuse to use The Fonz in Cracked. Jennifer Marlowe was played by Loni Anderson, Dietrich was Steve Landesberg.
M*A*S*H*E*D
Cracked #182, November 1981
a: John Severin
The beginning of the show had departed character Radar (Gary Burghoff) looking out for helicopters in the opening titles. Here it's Cracked mascot Sylvester P. Smythe.
Godzilla didn't exist until 1954, but they would make references to the films on the real show as well.
M*A*S*H stood for Mobile Army Surgical Hosital.
Col. Blake (McLean Stevenson) was a star the first three seasons before he was replaced by Col. Potter. Stevenson left to star in his own shows which all flopped and couldn't return to this one since his character was killed in battle.
Archie Bunker is in the final panel, as are Loni Anderson, Jimmie Walker, and Greg Evigan of B.J. And the Bear.

THE DAY M*A*S*H*E*D ALMOST ENDED
Cracked #190, October 1982

FAREWELL M*A*S*H*E*D: A CRACKED REMEMBRANCE
Cracked #194, May 1983
a: John Severin

I mentioned how Radar and Col. Blake were in the original cast. Winchester replaced Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and B.J. replaced Trapper John (Wayne Rogers)
They phased out things like peeping on Margaret in the shower by this point.
Houlihan was rivals with Hawkeye and B.J. (and earlier Trapper) and had an off and on again affair with Burns.
Tomorrow is the last day with the parodies from Crazy and Sick.

  1. In the parody from Cracked #182, the man in the background of page 2, panel 5 is Vic Tayback from the show Alice. And in the final panel, the three people on the left are the hosts of That's Incredible: Fran Tarkenton, Cathy Lee Crosby, and John Davidson.
