MAYBERRY R.I.P.
Sick #79, October 1970
w: Guy Thomas
a: Jack Sparling

Continues where The Andy Griffith Show left off after most of the cast left taking place in the same town with the same locations. The show began with Sam Jones (Ken Berry) and his son Mike (Buddy Foster) as the Andy and Opie stand-ins playing catch and breaking a window. Francis Bavier reprises her role as Aunt Bee.
George Lindsay continues as Goober, hanging out at Emmett (Paul Hartman)'s store with Howard (Jack Dodson) and Sam.
This parody uses the motif of Mayberry as a racist sundown town, an idea later revisited in one of the very first issues of RAW. Until the sixties, the roles of Democrats and Republicans were the reverse of what they are now and George Wallace ran as a staunch segregationist. If his name weren't on his shirt, I would not have known it was him and now the strip isn't quite as disturbing (emphasis on AS). Sparling apparently couldn't get a good likeness of Goober either unless the klansman wearing a whoopee hat was the joke.
