N.Y.P.D. was a series about the police department in (where else?) New York City, mostly shot on location, about three police detectives on the job, Lt. Mike Haines (Jack Warden) and detectives Jeff Ward (Robert Hooks) and Johnny Corso (Frank Converse). The parody is a bunch of old cop jokes without requiring anyone to know anything about the show. The police siren in the opening was probably the source for the opening of Police Squad!

  1. In the first panel of the last page, the poster reading 'Wanted in Puerto Rico' is of Adam Clayton Powell Jr., the powerful Congressman from Harlem. At this time, Powell had been barred from taking his seat for the term, due to his personal misuse of public funds. His third wife, who he put on the public payroll, was from Puerto Rico, and he owned a villa there.
