Profile of the Jarrett family putting their life together after the recent death of one of their sons. Calvin (Donald Sutherland) is the father and Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) is the mother. Conrad(Timothy Hitton) has just returned from the psychiatric hospital after attempting suicide.
Conrad is on the swim team and has just started seeing a psychiatrist, Dr. Berger (Judd Hirsch).
The family barely communicates and Beth is upset that Calvin told people Conrad was seeing a psychiatrist.
Conrad quits the swim team despite the protests of his coach (M. Emmett Walsh). He is angry his psychiatrist has no feelings and lashes out at a family gathering.
Conrad has flashbacks about being with his brother dying in a boating accident and how he could have stopped it. He has a breakthrough while seeing Dr. Berger but time is up. Calvin starts going to Dr. Berger as well. Conrad goes on a date with Jeanette (Elizabeth McGovern), a girl he met at school.
On their date, Conrad can't enjoy himself when his friends come in and make Jeanette laugh, then Conrad has another breakthrough session with Dr. Berger. Jeanette apologizes for embarrassing Conrad earlier. During a vacation with some friends, the parents have an argument.
Calvin has a flashback towhen he had better times with Beth. In the movie, They look exactly the same in high school. They can both see they're falling out of love. Just as Conrad realizes he doesn't tell his parents he loves them enough, they divorce.
This was the cover for the South American edition. It won the Oscar for best picture that year, but I'm not sure what the joke is supposed to be, unless maybe it's just that the award looks like Alfred.

  1. Minor trivia: Timothy Hutton won "New Star of theYear" Golden Globe for this performance. He was thus the presenter of the controversial "New Star of the Year" to Pia Zadora the next year.

In the SCTV parody of that controversy ("The People's Global Golden Choice Awards", Skip Bittman beats Hutton for "Newcomer of the Year" which causes a riot.)
