KRAKATOA: EAST OF JAVA a/k/a VOLCANO (1969)
dir: Bernard L. Kowalski

Cracked #85, July 1970
a: John Severin

Disaster movie about the Batavia Queen, a ship in the late nineteenth century off the Dutch East Indies ilse of Krakatoa, and the events that took place when a volcano erupted there. Among the passengers are prisoners of a penal colony. The ship's captain is Chris Hanson (Maximillian Schell). Other passengers include the Flying Borgheses, Leoncavallo (Sal Mineo) and Giovanni (Rosanno Brazzi), Douglas Rigby (John Leyton), owner and operator of a diving bell, Toshi (Jacqui Chan), a pearl diver, Harry Connerly (Brian Keith), and Charley (Barbara Werle).
The main reason for the voyage is to find a sunken treasure full of valuable pearls.

  1. Smh. "Crackedatoa" was right there.

Mad made a joke years later about how badly this movie bombed. in #188, they had an article called "The Mad Clearance Catalog", where they pretended to be selling off surplus stock and defective premises, such as spoofs of this and a few other flops.

Fun fact: as the critics couldn't resist pointing out, Krakatoa is actually west of Java.
