SECRETIVE SANTA VICTORIA

THE SECRET OF SANTA VITTORIA (1969)
dir: Stanley Kramer

SECRETIVE SANTA VICTORIA
Cracked #88, October 1970
a: John Severin

In post-Mussolini Italy during World War II, the town of Santa Vittoria is about to be invaded by the German occupying force, and have several bottles of wine confiscated, the town's only product. The town's afraid to deal with the oncoming soldiers, so they nominate Bombolini (Anthony Quinn), the town fool, to deal with it. It's established that he's a fool early on when he gets in spats with his wife Rosa (Anna Magnani) and needs to have his daughter's boyfriend rescue him from the water tower.
News comes that the Germans or coming and they should hide their wine, which they're able to hide in a nearby cave. And they leave a believable some behind so the soldiers won't think they're being lied to.
The people in the town work the next few hours to hide the wine ahead of the Germans and Bombelini greets them when they arrive as if nothing's the matter'
One of the soldiers is Arte Johnson of Laugh-In

There is also a plot where one of the German soldiers tries to chase Bombolini's daughter and she marries the man who saves her. The German soldiers show the quantity of the wine doesn't match the records they have and they keep demanding to know where it's hidden.

  1. In the mob of Italians at the end, I'm not sure who the guy on the left is. Maybe Perry Como? (The rest are pretty easy: Dean Martin, Ben Gazzara, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Liberace.)
