AN INDIFFERENT WORLD

A DIFFERENT WORLD
NBC 1987-1993

MAD #281, September 1988
w: Dick DeBartolo
a: Angelo Torres

Spinoff of The Cosby Show, originally about Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) going off to college. The show took place at Hillman College with Denise, Jaleesa Vinson (Dawnn Lewis), Maggie (Marisa Tomei), Whitney (Jasmine Guy), and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). The show was originally produced by Anne Beatts, writer for National Lampoon and Saturday Night Live and creator of Square Pegs, but replaced with someone more experienced with black college life. Cast members of The Cosby Show often made guest appearances, like in this parody where they feature Denise's sister Rudi (Keshia Knight-Pulliam). Lisa Bonet did not last past the first season.
Bill Cosby was the spokesperson for Coke, back before it was discovered he was putting roofies in it.
The picture Bonet has in the fourth panel is of Robert DeNiro, who plays the devil in Angel Heart.
-Outside in the next-to-last panel is Louise Lasser, who starred in the Norman Lear show Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
-Even though the punchline is that there was a laughtrack machine for Lear's lecture, his shows were always in front of a real audience.

A DEFICIENT WORLD
Cracked #235, May 1988
w: Joe Catalano
a: Rick Altergott

This parody was also done in the first season when Lisa Bonet was still on the show.
