DOLTISH HOUSE
Crazy #53, August 1979

TV version of Animal House, extremely toned down, as you can see if you watch the clip. Crazy obviously rushed to have the magazine come out at the same time as the show. The series aired February through April of 1979, the magazine came out in May (the cover date is always three months in advance), an article is given to an editor at least two or three months before the magazine is published, and pitched a few weeks before that. Since it was a collaboration between a writer and artist, even if it the art was quickly hacked out, must have at least been given a few weeks time. This all means this was written before the show aired and published after it was canceled. The belief that it would be long-running and not much was known about the show except that it was based on Animal House is further evidenced by their cover featuring John Belushi, who wasn't even on it.
And the movie ends with the students not being allowed to graduate. They must have been banking on the fact that it was rated R and most of their readers probably hadn't seen it. I know I hadn't.
Only half the same actors were used. They used the same actor to play Dean Wormer (John Vernon), but a different person was Neidermeyer (Gary Cookson). Instead of the John Belushi character "Bluto" Blutarsky, who was their breakout star, it was his brother Blotto (Josh Mostel). Bruce McGill and Stephen Furst reprised their roles as D-Day and Flounder.
-Paper Chase was another movie and TV show about a law school.
-The part of Otter was Peter Fox on this show.
All three networks thought this show was going to be a hit and also had shows about college life, more information on that in the video clips below.
The reporter is modeled after Truman Capote.
NBC had an imitation called Brothers and Sisters, and CBS had Co-Ed Fever. None of the three lasted more than a couple months, the latter not lasting beyond its pilot.
