MAD had a feature in the mid-80s called A Bad Case of the Re-Runs that parodied older TV shows from the 50s and 60s.

The Andy Griffith Show was a spinoff of The Danny Thomas Show about a Southern sheriff in the small town of Mayberry, his family and its residents. The main cast included Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors, who would have his own show), Andy Taylor (Griffith), girlfriend Helen (Aneta Corsaut), son Opie (Ronny Howard), and deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts). It was a vehicle for actor and comic Andy Griffith.
MAD artist Jack Davis drew the show for one of his TV Guide covers.
In the early days of MAD, they often reprinted material by a lot of comedians like Bob & Ray and Ernie Kovacs. A few times they used the routines of Andy Griffith before he had the sitcom. This is from MAD #40, July 1958

Better than any of the print parodies was SCTV's The Merv Griffith Show, a mash-up of this show and the talk show of Merv Griffin, with impressions of supporting characters Floyd (Howard McNear) and Otis (Hal Smith). Featuring Eugene Levy's post-stroke Howard McNear. Woooo!

  1. I don't know how I could have forgotten about this until now - the most vicious take on The Andy Griffith Show, in comics or elsewhere, was by Josh and Drew Friedman.
