BEACH BLANKET PARTY

BEACH PARTYetc.
(1963-1967) dir: William Asher, others

This was a big genre for a few years, comedies for teenagers, most starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, parodied by most of the humor magazines.

MAD VISITS A TYPICAL TEENAGE BEACH MOVIE
MAD #95, June 1965
w: Larry Siegel
a: Mort Drucker

The night before the big surf competition, Go-Go and Annette have a romance on the beach while the brainy guy is no fun. It's the morning of the competition (I think the editor got some of the names mixed up). Don Rickles is refereeing the competition. The fact that the challenger is a Jewish surfer gives the publisher and editor of MAD a chance to get put in this.
Iceberg has beaten all of the gang and now Egghead, the brainy member of the gang, challenges him. He has never ridden out on the ocean before, and it's the most dangerous wave yet. He not only is wiped out, but so is everyone else.

BEACH BLANKET PARTY
Cracked #137, November 1976
a: John Severin

The girls go to the beach to meet King Surfer. Any opportunity to put the Fonz in an issue of Cracked.
There's always a musical number in these.
Frankie and Annette get into another fight.
The cliché of the unattractive girl taking off her glasses and letting down her hair, and now she's beautiful.

Frankie and Annette get back together, but when a tidal wave takes him, she mistakes it for him breaking up with her again.

BEACH PARTY A GO-GO
Sick #42, February 1966
w: Paul Laikin

One of the movie parody/reviews Sick would often do with publicity stills they were given. With this they did a story as if the James Bond film Dr. No was a beach movie.

BIKINI BEACH NUTS
Go-Go #4, December 1966
a: Jon D'Agostino

Here's an odd one. This appeared in Go-Go, a comic book-sized magazine that was half comics and half teen fan magazine.
One of their recurring comics features was their character Miss Bikini Luv, later drawn by Jim Aparo of Batman fame.

  1. Taking a crack at a few of the people in the Mad parody: aside of Frankie & Annette as the leads, I think Egghead is Fabian; the blonde guy (page 2, panel 6) is Tab Hunter; and the guy with dollar signs on his shirt is Bobby Darin.

    1. I think I got another - Johnny is Tommy Sands.

    2. Aha! Iceberg, the muscly surfer, is Robert Mitchum's son James, who played a character called Eskimo in a beach movie called Ride the Wild Surf. I think that's everyone.
