BO BUMMEL

BEAU BRUMMELL (1954)
dir: Curtis Bernhardt

BO BUMMEL
Panic #9, June-July 1955
w: Jack Mendelsohn
a: Wallace Wood

Historical drama about a man's rise and fall in 18th century London, though the parody concentrates more on the costumes.
When Brummel (Stewart Granger) offends the Prince of Wales (Peter Ustinov) by criticizing the army uniform, he is discharged. Lady Patricia Belham (Elizabeth Taylor) pays him a visit and questions why he would risk his military career by being so outspoken.
Going through life with no aspirations, in a walk through the town Beau publicly criticizes and publicly criticizes an official giving a speech, and gains fame for doing that, so decides politics is for him. (Note how Robert Morley appears in the background of many panels. Though he has a big part in the film, he is not in the parody).
Word gets to the prince about Beau's speeches and he orders Beau to cease immediately, but is charmed by him and asks him to become advisor. They soon become friends.

Lady Patricia is engaged to another, and would marry Brummel instead, but does not find him stable enough.
(Piracy was another EC Comic.)

Beau realizes the only way the Lady will accept his hand in marriage is if he gets a title. The prince turns him down, and he is insulted.
Years later, Beau is so hurt by this end in friendship he leaves the country and exiles himself to France. The prince is now king, and when he gets news of the king's visit to France and wants to see him and mend everything.

  1. On the last page, the "guy who looks like Napoleon" is Marlon Brando, who had starred as Napoleon the year before in a movie called Desiree.
