BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
ABC 1978-79
CATTLE CAR GALAXICA
MAD #208, July 1979
w: Dick DeBartolo
a: Angelo Torres
Science-fiction show that had a reboot, but this one is from 1978, inspired by Star Wars about a group of refugees from different planets on their way to Earth while fleeing from the Cylons.
As we begin, we are at the command ship being led by Commander Adama (Lorne Greene) with Lieutenant Athena (Maren Jansen) at the computer. Starbuck (Dirk Benedict) and Apollo (Richard Hatch) are on the ships in space.
(They often made up units on their command ship. Their plots were often said to be derivative of other movies).
Baltar (John Colicos) is a human who has betrayed his race and taken the side of the Cylons.
In this episode, Starbuck and Apollo have crashed somewhere and Athena wants to go out and find them.
Lucifer (Jonathan Harris), one of the Cylons, seeks to find some escaped prisoners.
Now the Cylons must do battle with the humans.
The humans have adopted a child, Boxy (Noel Hathaway) who was orphaned when the home planet was destroyed, as was his pet daggitt, an alien canine. They have replaced his daggitt with Muffy, a robot canine.
They make a reference to the fact that Lorne Greene's previous series was the long-running western Bonanza.
The Cylons are defeated once again and Starbuck tries to get in Athena's pants.
Apollo finally gets to Earth (Oh, and I should also mention he's Adama's son).

In the Cracked episode, there is a food shortage.
Cameos by Star Trek characters throughout this parody.
Star Wars too.
And Lassie.
(And yet another Bonanza reference.)
BATTLESTAR GALACKLUSTRE
Crazy #47, February 1979
w & a: Murad Gumen
The “Jerry” here is based on a real person I know who is now a well-known animation historian and consultant but in his youth was friends with Murad Gumen.
Cassiopeia (Laurette Sprang), the western version of a geisha, was not used in the other parodies.
In that next to last panel in the middle is John Dykstra, who did special effects for the show.
They must fight the Cylons again, and Jerry comes with them.
Yet another Ponderosa reference
From the cover of this issue of Sick, you can see there's a treasure trove of movie and TV parodies in this issue, which we'll get to in due time.

Starbuck and Apollo are erroneously referred to as brothers in this.
Of the four parodies, only three mention the Ponderosa ranch. I'm very disappointed.
This is all taken from the first episode, where Boxey loses his father and pet and just has his mother (Jane Seymour, who marries Apollo and dies later)
Starbuck and Apollo have landed on a Vegas-like planet that's too good to be true, also from that episode.
Fan magazine Pizzazz featured them on their front cover.
And of course the show had a comics adaptation.

One last cameo in the Cracked parody: on the last page, panel 2, Athena's screen is showing Phil Silvers as Sgt. Bilko. Oddly, he's in front of a sign that reads "M.A.S.H. 4077". A crossover?
