THE DOPES OF HAPHAZZARD (part 1)

DUKES OF HAZZARD
1979-1985 CBS

Fairly innocuous kiddie fare, but has been taken out of syndication because the Dukes' car is named the General Lee and has the Confederate flag on its rooftop. It's now realized these things are symbols for white supremacy, and thus the implied ideology of the Duke family, but in the late 70s and early 80s they were just two good ol' boys never meanin' no harm.

Even then, the Confederate symbol was somewhat problematic since here you barely ever see the whole thing in these.

THE DOPES OF HAPHAZZARD
MAD #219, December 1980
w: Dick DeBartolo

The story of two cousins, Bo and Luke (John Schneider, Tom Wopat) is narrated by Waylon Jennings. The Dukes live in a small town in Hazzard County, run by Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke) with Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (James Best) and deputy Enos (Sonny Shroyer). At home were Bo and Luke's uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle) and cousin Daisy (Catherine Bach). Bo and Luke were on parole for running moonshine and trying to stay clean and outsmart the law that was constantly setting them up.
Boss Hogg was the mayor of the town as well as its richest man and owner of half the property there. He was Bo and Luke's probation officer and had a particular bone to pick with them since they always foiled his schemes. Daisy worked for the sheriff and had a will-they-or-won't-they relationship with Enos, so was always able to tell the Duke boys what they were up to through CB radio.
The last panel shows Mammy and Pappy Yokum from Li'l Abner, a comic strip that influenced this show in a way.

The mechanic Cooter (Ben Jones) was a recurring character on the show.
Maybe it wasn't established when this was written or the staff missed it, but Hazzard county was in Georgia.
The show always had a cliff-hanger freeze-frame before the commercial with the narrator usually saying something like "Uh-oh, how are them Dukes gonna get outta this now?"
The cast of The Dukes of Hazzard wrote in to show their appreciation of the spoof.

THE DORKS OF HAZZARDOUS
Cracked #170, August 1980

-"Daisy Dukes" has become the term for womens' cutoff jean shorts.
-Bo and Luke shot flaming arrows because they were forbidden to possess firearms as part of their parole.
The Dukes never opened the doors of their car but jumped in and out of the windows, something that isn't quite as easy to pull off as it looks.
Cracked also had Dukes of Hazzard cross over with CHiPS which you can get to by clicking on the link to that show on the side. In fact, Cracked did three other parodies, which I'll post tomorrow.

THE DUPES OF HAGGARD
Crazy #68, November 1980

Here Boss Hogg's initial sheriff and deputy are Andy Taylor and Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show.
The new sheriff is Sheriff Lobo (Claude Akins), from NBC's answer to this show.

There was also The Dicks of Hazzard in the porn world.
A feature film was made of this series in 2005.

There were so many pages I've split this post up. Stay tuned for even more Dukes of Hazzard parodies tomorrow.
