MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962)
dir: Lewis Milestone
MAD #80, July 1963
w: Larry Siegel
a: Wallace Wood
Remake of earlier version, satirizing Hollywood almost as much as the movie itself. Story of Captain Bligh (Trevor Howard) of the H.M.S. Bounty and his voyage to Tahiti to gather breadfruit for the king.
Marlon Brando is first lieutenant Fletcher Christian.
They get to Tahiti in a roundabout way through a route closer but much harder to navigate. Here Tahiti is run by Hugh Hefner. While the crew is stuck in Tahiti as the breadfruits mature, Christian carries on a romance with Maimaita (Tarita Teriipaia). In making up for lost time, Bligh cuts the rations of his men when they return.
As Bligh becomes more cruel to the men, Seaman Mills (Richard Harris) urges Mr. Christian to declare mutiny.
At the bottom of page 2, the guy who says he was in Sayonara with Brando is Red Buttons.
ReplyDeleteThere was also a parody of the story in #24 of the '50s Harvey horror comic Witches Tales, called Mutiny on the Boundary. Drawn by Bob Powell, it was that issue's "Boo of the Month", a series of Mad-style stories that also included Howard Nostrand's "Low Noon". In it, 'Captain Blah' was a caricature of Charles Laughton from the original 1935 film.
