LUST BOAT
MAD #202, October 1978
w: Dick DeBartolo
a: Angelo Torres
The program was an hour long sitcom that featured two or three interweaving storylines taking place aboard a cruise ship, the Pacific Princess, with different passengers as the guest stars each week carrying the show even though the regular cast was the ship's crew. The crew was Capt. Merrill Stubing (Gavin McLeod), Adam 'Doc' Bricker (Bernie Kopell), yeoman purser 'Gopher' (Fred Grandy), Isaac the bartender (Ted Lange), and cruise director Julie McCoy (Lauren Tewes).
The passengers don't seem to be likenesses of anyone, which is strange since well-known guest stars were the draw of the show.
Doc was always hitting on passengers, a premise doesn't age well, particularly since there's no place for them to escape to.
This was the cover for the Dutch edition of MAD. These would be recognizable public figures, but I don't know if they're political, celebrity, or what. I pretty sure the joke has something to do with them being gay since the Statue of Liberty is depicted as reknowned seventies homophobe Anita Bryant but not sure if the people depicted actually were gay or if MAD wass making fun of their demeanor.
There were two pilots that were originally TV movies and the ads in TV Guide were drawn by founding MAD artist Will Elder.

The guests here are Suzanne Somers and David Cassidy. Herve Villechaise was the diminutive star of companion show Fantasy Island.

LOVE THAT BOAT
Sick #124, June 1978
w: George Kashdan
a: Jack Sparling
Here the guest stars are Sonny and Cher Bono, who were already divorced by then in real life, Flip Wilson as Geraldine, and Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh, probably better known by Sick readers for his caricature in Bugs Bunny cartoons.
In the middle panel behind Sonny it looks like John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino.
It's supposed to be Jackie Onassis and Andy Warhol as guest speakers, with Bella Abzug, Johnny Carson, Burt Reynolds, and Dinah Shore as passengers.
John Denver in the background.
Clark Gable was Mr. Christian opposite Charles Laughton in Mutiny on the Bounty.
Saturday Night Live did a mashup in the 90s of Love Boat with Star Trek.

In the Bananas parody, the wealthy dowager at the bottom of page 2 is Margaret Dumont, frequent foil of Groucho in the Marx Brothers movies.
ReplyDeleteThe Mad parody presents a very minor mystery. On page 5, there's a sign promoting entertainment by someone named Michaelina Martel. I got curious and Googled her, and found almost nothing. IMDB says she was an actress, but lists only one screen credit (as 'Blonde at Casino').
I wouldn't have thought anything more of it, until I noticed her name pop up in the background of a Sick parody from around the same time. So she was known for something; I just can't guess what.
