THE LOVE CORRUPTION

LOVE CONNECTION
1983-1994 SYNDICATION

A contestant on the game show would go out with one of three people based on their video profiles. Host Chuck Woolery showed the videos, the studio guessed which one the contestanant picked, then they showed the actual date. The couple would discuss it if it went well, then they would go on a second one at the show's expense. If the audience chose someone else, the contestant would go out with that person and later report on it.

The women on this cover gag are Lorena Bobbitt, who made headlines for cutting off her husband's penis, Tonya Harding, an Olympic skater caught injuring her opponent, and Amy Fisher a/k/a the Long Island Lolita, famous for being an underage girl having an affair with a car mechanic. You may be saying “Big deal. Marriages are destroyed by guys having affairs with teenage girls all the time. What makes this one so special?” It's because this guy's name was Buttafuoco and people like Jay Leno and Howard Stern liked being able to say a name that sounded dirty.

This wasn't part of the same issue as that cover.
The LifeCall commercials were on during the day all throughout the 80s and 90s and the origin of the “I've fallen and I can't get up” catchphrase. Pee-Wee Herman having been in an adult bookstore was probably joked about more than time actually spent there, probably what was intended. William Kennedy Smith was charged for sexual assault and Mike Tyson was doing time then for domestic abuse.

  1. "What makes this one so special"

Yes, the funny last name is why it stayed in the news. The original reason it got into the news was that Ms. Fisher shot Mrs. Buttafuoco. Also the couple were willing to do tabloid TV with Amy Fisher and three networks did a made-for-TV movie on the subject.
