I overlooked this initially because I didn't realize this was a parody of something. I remember this was on in syndication in the 80s but it was titled Black Sheep Squadron. It was a TV series about the Black Sheep Squadron, a misfit air force squadron in World War II.

The squad was led by “Pappy” Boyington (Robert Conrad) and among his men were Gutterman (James Whitmore, Jr.) and Casey (W. K. Stratton)
Other men of his were Boyle (Larry Manetti), Bragg (Dirk Blocker), and T. J. (Robert Ginty). Severin got around having to caricature them by drawing them inside planes.

  1. It looks like the Mexican edition of Mad did a parody of this show. In Mexico, it was titled Los Tigres Voladores, or The Flying Tigers. Issue #19 of the first Mexican edition has an article called Los Pibes Voladores, which seems to translate to The Flying Kids.
