OUTER SANCTUM
MAD #5, June-July 1953
w: Harvey Kurtzman
a: Bill Elder

Long running horror anthology series on radio, then TV, based on book series, branched out into movies.

The creaking door at the beginning and end was the show's trademark. E. C. Comics claimed the gag “nice, fat, errand boy wanted” got them in trouble. I don't know how much of that is true. Then again, so much other stuff in comics from the time that was considered the worst hardcore pornography is the most harmless fare you can imagine. What did get them in trouble, that same issue, was a profile of publisher William Gaines, a parody of their “EC Artist of the Month” feature, that mentioned newsstand distributors were associated with the mob (which is true) that led to drivers refusing to deliver the comic.
