INVASION OF THE BOOTY SNATCHERS

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978)
dir: Philip Kaufman

MAD # 209, September 1979

Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) is trying to warn of an alien invasion, and one of the people he confides in is famous psychiatrist Dr. David Kibner (Leonard Nimoy). His friend and co-worker Elizabeth (Brooke Adams) is the first to notice this, seeing that her boyfriend Geoffrey (Art Hindle) is acting differently. The aliens are coming in the form of plants, which contain beings that are making duplicates of humans.
Elizabeth discovers there's a new species of flower she hasn't seen before. Matthew is a health inspector that finds a rat turd in a restaurant kitchen.
Elizabeth sees the first signs of her boyfriend acting weird and tells Matthew of what she saw. Later, they're driving to a book party for Dr. Kibner and a man (Kevin McCarthy, the protagonist from the movie this was a remake of) jumps on their car to warn them of an alien invasion, which they dismiss as the rantings of a street person, and find he was run down by another driver. At the party, Dr. Kibner listens to another guest telling the same story Elizabeth has.
An element they don't use is Jack Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum), a rival author, who is annoying everyone at the party and keeps interrupting Matthew as he's on the phone with the police trying to inform them of what's going on, Jack is married to Nancy (Veronica Cartwright), who runs the mudbaths. At the mudbaths, they find one of their customers has been covered in a web and they call Matthew to tell him. He goes to Elizabeth's house and finds the same thing has happened with her at a later stage, with her already body having already been stolen. He brings her to his home before anything further can happen.
Dr. Kibner believes them about the situation because he is a good friend. They probably call him Dr. Schmock because of Nimoy's most famous role as Spock. Matthew realizes the aliens have injected people with a formula, are duplicating everyone, and delivering the clones of them covered in pods back to their home planet. The laboratories where they are doing this are in warehouses and he tries to destroy them before it's too late.
One of the clones is Billy Carter, Jimmy's brother. While he was president, the country was obsessed with his having his own beer, though I don't think anyone ever bought it other than as a collectors' item years later.

Matthew and Elizabeth have fallen in love, and must stay awake so the aliens will be unable to duplicate them. Dr. Kibner has become one of them now, and injects the two of them with the serum, and they flee.
The aliens are delivering the pods onto their spaceships by boats. Matthew and Elizabeth fall asleep,. and it's now too late, they have been duplicated by everyone else. Later Nancy sees Matthew in the street, thinking he's the only other person that hasn't been brainwashed, and turns out to be wrong.
In the last panel, the fact that some of the beings are dogs refers to that happening while they're all trying to escape towards the end
