FONZ FOR PRESIDENT, part 1

FONZ FOR PRESIDENT!
Cracked Collectors' Edition #16, 1976

Continuing from the three Happy Days posts a few months ago...

Usually Cracked Collectors' Edition was a compilation of reprint but this was one of the few issues with mostly all-new material. There wasn't enough room for Happy Days material in the main magazine so they had to branch out. In the mid-70s their parodies were more like fan fiction anyway and tried to compete with Tiger Beat as much as with MAD.

This cover also used other 70s celebrities and politicians of 1976 to sell copies such as Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter, Baretta (Robert Blake), Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord), Police Woman (Angie Dickinson), Columbo (Peter Falk), Kojak (Telly Savalas), Laverne and Shirley (Penny Marshall & Cindy Williams), John Wayne, J. J. Evans (Jimmie Walker), and The Godfather (Marlon Brando). Surprisingly Jaws, the Bionic family, and the cast of Welcome Back, Kotter are absent.
They copied the letters column that Cracked used which probably didn't have real letters either.

I think the heads in the top picture are pasted on. Lords of Flatbush was a 1974 film where Henry Winkler played a character very much like the Fonz.
Here's a still from that movie, which also starred Sylvester Stallone.
They used that same still of Rondo Hatton in several issues of Cracked and the many monster magazines they also published.
Arnold Horshack and Juan Epstein were characters from Welcome Back, Kotter
The rest to come tomorrow. Click on "newer post" for part 2.
