JAW'D, TOO

JAWS 2 (1978)
dir: Jeannot Szwarc

Now that we looked at how the first one was handled, let's look and how the four major black & white humor magazines handled its sequel.
MAD #204, March 1979
w: Dick DeBartolo
a: Mort Drucker

Two deep sea photographers find the remains of the Orca, the boat used to kill the shark in the first movie, at the bottom of the ocean, and they are the first victims and drop their camera. At the beginning there is a ceremony for the opening of Amity Island's new hotel, and Sheriff Brody (Roy Scheider) arrives late, much to the dismay of his wife Ellen (Lorraine Gary). Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) is making the speech.

Being a movie about a shark, they use the lyrics to Mack the Knife in this.

The people in the town, mostly teenagers, are preparing for the activities of the summer. A girl is water skiing on the ocean and is the next to be attacked by the shark. The driver notices she's been attacked and tries to save herself in self-defense with an attempt to burn the shark with gasoline.
She ends up exploding herself instead. A citizen of the town and some local teens have seen this and report it to Brody. Brody sees a threat and recommends a job for his son Mike (Mark Gruner) to make sure he stays out of the water. Brody has found floating debris in the water and while searching for more evidence the burnt corpse sneaks up on him. A beached whale with bite marks has been found washed up on the shore and Brody calls oceanography expert Dr. Elkins (Collin Wilcox) to investigate it.
A photographer has found the camera from the ocean and developed pictures with evidence that there is a shark. Brody shows this to the town board who finds the pictures too fuzzy and think he's delusional. Vaughn and the rest of the board are giving a tour of the beach later and are somewhat scared seeing Brody in a tower. His dubious photographs and him opening fire on what he thinks is the shark on a crowded beach get him fired.
A drunken Brody reveals to his wife he's lost his job and she remain supportive. Meanwhile the teenagers are preparing for their big party at the lighthouse. Mike, even though he's grounded, says he'll go anyway, especially when a girl he likes says she'll be there. As he's sneaking out, his younger brother Sean (Marc Gilpin) demands to come along or he'll tell. They all go out in a caravan (that part's not used) Two other teenagers, Eddie (Gary Dubin) and Tina (Ann Dusenberry) go out on their own and Eddie is killed.
A fired Sheriff Brody decides do take the matter into his own hands, his wife in tow, and they take over a police boat, now finding out their kids have sneaked out and gone to party at the lighthouse. They find Eddie and Tina's boat, with a shocked Tina still in it, and rescue her. The rest of the teenagers are on their way to the lighthouse and the shark starts chasing them and destroying parts of their boats, and they tie all the remaining pieces together stay together.
A helicopter finds them and tries to rescue them but is attacked and the officer is killed. They decide to go to Cable Junction because it's closer and attempt to paddle their way there but decide not to since putting their arms in the water will attract the shark. Brody finds them, attempts to save them, but his boat crashes.
Brody still lands on the island and attempts to save all the teenagers and their makeshift boat with a rope, but ends up pulling up a power cable instead. He starts hitting it, hoping the vibrations will attract the shark and uses the wire to lure the shark up to the surface and the shark bites the cable, electrocuting it, becoming the hero. This last panel here has been tacked on.
This was the cover to the Mexican edition, which makes more sense, for MAD.

JAWS TOO
Cracked #154, October 1978

For some reason, the photographer is drawn as W. C. Fields, and Farrah Fawcett has been added. And George Kennedy is the deputy,
I don't know the reason for the William Holden or Sylvester Stallone or Marlon Brando characters either. Maybe with Stallone they were trying to cash in on Rocky.

JAWS ZZZZZZZZ
Crazy #43, October 1978
w: Bill Quidort (Paul Laikin)
a: Kent Gamble
There was one person water skiing and one person driving the boat and the sheriff and the mayor weren't together in this but who cares?
In a couple panels on the bottom it looks like the oceanographer is swiped from caricatures of Don Rickles but I can't tell from where.
Another Totie Fields joke just like in the parody of the first movie a couple days ago.
JAWS TOO
Sick #123, October 1978
w: Arnold Drake
a: Jack Sparling
I don't know where this plotline about the mob and casinos comes from. Did we see the same movie?
UPDATE:

JAWS 2
cover to Kaputt, German version of Cracked.

The franchise is called Der Weisse Hai (The Great White Shark) in Germany.

1 comment:

  1. In the Cracked parody, I think the diving instructor is Robert Mitchum rather than William Holden.

In the Crazy parody, on page 4, I think the diving instructor is meant to be Olympic gold medalist Mark Spitz. (Of course, with Gamble it can be hard to tell. There are panels where I think he's drawing Mike and his girlfriend by swiping Drucker from Mad's parody of Class of '44.)
