IRONRIDE
MAD #139, December 1970
w: Lou Silverstone
a: Angelo Torres
In the 60s and 70s, detective shows all seemed to have “gimmicks”. This one was that Ironside (Raymond Burr) was paralyzed from the waist down. He was assisted by Eve Whitfield (Barbara Anderson), Ed Brown (Don Galloway), and Mark Sanger (Don Mitchell). Raymond Burr had previously starred on Perry Mason and supposedly he was in a wheelchair in this because he was very lazy in real life and didn't want to do repeated takes standing up.

At the end of the Mad parody, Burr is reciting the lyrics to "You'll Never Walk Alone", from Carousel. I don't know why, or why the Cracked parody has him singing "Little Green Apples".
ReplyDeleteOn the last page of the Sick parody, they screwed up the order of the tiers, which is as bush league as it gets. But with a story like this, maybe printing more of it out of order would have been an improvement.
'You'll Never Walk Alone' is a joke about his wheelchair.
DeleteOh, of course. I should have gotten that. And here I was wondering if Burr had put out one of those celebrity vanity albums.
