Irma (Shirley MacLaine) is a hooker in France who is arrested by an honest cop named Nestor (Jack Lemmon) who gets fired from his job and becomes friends with her, then her lover and then her mec (pimp) after beating her existing pimp. Nestor becomes jealous of her clients and disguises himself as an Englishmen and woos her. Eventually he kills off his secret identity and marries her.
